What Is Tatreez? A Guide to Palestinian Embroidery

Tatreez (تطريز) is the traditional cross-stitch embroidery of Palestinian women. For generations it has been stitched onto dresses, scarves, and household textiles, carrying stories of family, village, and land in thread. In 2021, UNESCO added Palestinian embroidery practices to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Where tatreez comes from

Tatreez grew over centuries in villages and towns across historic Palestine. Girls learned the craft from their mothers and grandmothers, and an embroidered dress was often a source of great pride. Patterns, colors, and stitching styles varied from place to place, so a dress could tell you a lot about where its wearer came from.

What the patterns mean

Many tatreez motifs draw on the natural world and daily life: flowers, trees, birds, and geometric shapes repeated in careful rows. Meanings differ by region and by family, and many patterns carry names that have been passed down by word of mouth. Two you may recognize are the olive branch, a symbol of peace and rootedness, and the Road to Cairo, a geometric pattern popular on bangles and cushions.

Wearing tatreez today

You do not have to sew to carry this tradition with you. Our Palestine collection brings tatreez patterns into everyday jewelry, including a Palestine map necklace with a tatreez flower design, a tatreez olive branch necklace in a pattern from Ramallah, and a Road to Cairo tatreez bangle. You can browse all of our heritage bracelets too.
